As more and more business shifts to online operations a growing focus has shifted to enabling websites to be more user-friendly for those with disabilities. These are but a few of the advancements that people are making in their effort to strive forward and promote more user-friendly usage of the World Wide Web. Continue reading →

With both the growing popularity of the internet as well as the increasing number of individuals with disabilities today many people are looking at developing both websites and technologies that allow people with disabilities to use computers and interact effectively online with both company websites as well as other individuals.

Aside from developing a speech web browser in order to assist those who may be blind or have other visual disabilities be able to browse the web many web developers are now also looking at website layout specifically to cater to all kinds of web browsers – both in standard browsing windows as well as in alternative browsers designed specifically to assist disabled individuals. This has led many companies to hire on developers and coders with the explicit purpose of designing a system that will be able to give users an enjoyable experience and allow them to both access all necessary information as well as use a website without difficulty.

Other software advancements have come in the form of speech recognition software, such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking, that allows users to not only type documents but control all computer actions through set voice commands. These dictation softwares can actually be trained to execute specific actions when told a command and can assist people with opening programs, browsing the web, fill in forms or do any number of other computer tasks. Additionally, they learn the more you use then, so those who have a difficult time using a standard keyboard and mouse may be able to rely upon dictation software instead to assist them.

At the same time hardware specifically for people suffering from some sort of disability is also being developed, such as the Braille keyboard used by many computer users – including those at Yahoo’s Accessibility Lab that specializes in developing effective usable programs to assist internet users regardless of their handicap. For others a one-handed keyboard can be purchased that allows all typing done on a full-sized keyboard to be done with simply one hand – FrogPad has developed one that can work via Bluetooth or USB cable and is designed to enable users to type 40-60 word per minute with one hand in a matter of just a few hours of usage. With the internet looking to play a bigger and bigger role in our lives these developments are helping keep users from all walks of life enabled and empowered when it comes to their own computing experience.

Having a successful internet business is simply a matter of understanding how things work, and applying that knowledge. It dose not take any special skill or any great intelligence. If you follow these five steps, you cannot fail. The most important thing, as with anything in life, is persistence. Continue reading →

STEP 1. Find something you feel is a good business opportunity. You can scour the internet for all sorts of different business ideas and opportunities. Doing a search on any search engine with the keywords Work At Home, Business Opportunities, Home Based Business, Affiliate Programs, Make Money Online, etc., will produce 1000s of different search results. Affiliate programs are THE ABSOLUTE BEST business opportunities out there because the ONLY thing you need to do to run your internet business is to market your affiliate link. With a traditional business you must deal with inventory, storage, packing, shipping, complaints, returns, phone calls, emails, checks and credit cards just to name a few! Not so with affiliate programs, once someone has clicked on your affiliate link your only job is getting the next person to click on it. Sweet deal!

STEP 2. Get your own webpage. You want to put your internet business on a webpage of your own. A webpage is like a store front. It projects respect to your business and who you are. Think about it. Do you feel the same about buying from a vendor on the street as you do about buying from a person in a store? They’re both vendors, but the store gives you a certain feeling about the person you are buying from that a street vendor just can’t give you! Your webpage dose not have to be fancy. If you only have a brief description of what your webpage is about along with individual descriptions of your product or products people will respect that. If it is affiliate programs you have decided upon, simply put a BRIEF description of what is being offered along with your affiliate link. Do not disclose too much in your description because people might THINK they know what it is all about and not click on your link. You want to let your affiliate website do all the selling for you. These sites are professionally designed to maximize the number of people who buy or join so a brief description, just enough to spike their curiosity, is sufficient.

STEP 3. Get your own Blog and make one post a day. A Blog, short for, “Web Log,” is a great way to establish yourself as an authority figure on whatever topic you decide. As people return to read your daily articles, they will eventually come to view you as an authority on whatever your Blog is about. They will eventually develop confidence in what you are saying, and will begin to trust you. As a result some people will check out your webpage to see what you have to offer them, and people tend to buy more from people they know and trust. Their confidence in you will be an additional factor that will compel people to buy from you. There are many places online that will host and let you set up your Blog for free.

STEP 4. Put Cost-Per-Click(CPC) advertising such as Google AdSense on your website. Having Cost-Per-Click advertising on your website is a way to earn additional income that can be VERY substantial. Most people who visit your website will not buy from you. If people are going to leave your website, wouldn’t you rather them leave through a link on your website that will pay you money every time someone clicks on it? Google makes putting their AdSense on your website E-A-S-Y! The ads are relevant to the content of your website. Google can even put its AdSense on your Blog as we’ll.

STEP 5. Write and submit articles to article submission sites. This is the most important advice you need to know. This is how you will get FREE advertising! People are searching the internet for free information. When you submit your articles online, the search engines will eventually find them and will spider every word. When people do a search using keywords or phrases that are in your articles, they will turn up in the search results, so be sure to insert highly searched for keywords and phrases into your articles! You will need to include at the bottom of all your articles your bio. Your bio will contain a brief description about who you are along with a link to your website. It might read for instance [ John Doe is the owner of yoursite.com. John helps people to work at home using various business opportunities that include affiliate programs. If you desire your own home based business visit http://www.yoursite.com] The more articles you write and submit, the higher the chances are of your articles keywords and phrases showing up on search results. The more links you have pointing back to your website, the higher your websites page rank with the search engines will be, meaning the higher up on the search results will your article turn up, so don’t stop writing and submitting articles! I do want to stress however, quality over quantity. Take your time and check your spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, etc. No one will take what you have to say seriously if you don’t write correctly.

So there you have it! Having a successful internet business is simply a matter of understanding how things work, and applying that knowledge. It dose not take any special skill or any great intelligence. If you follow these five steps, you cannot fail. The most important thing, as with anything in life, is persistence. Continue following steps three and five and watch your internet business grow!

Nothing lasts forever, especially that shiny new ipod you got for christmas. We take a look and see what you can do once age catches up with your ipod. Continue reading →

It’s a fact that nothing lasts forever. Be it human, any gadget (apart from nokia handsets from the late 90s) or animal. Eventually, it all stops working. With regards to this, your precious Ipod will just become an expensive paperweight once it stops working, right?

The smallest damage to any component of an Ipod like its hard disk, the screen or on newer models, the flash memory, can result in a dead Ipod. Despite this, a dead Ipod can still turn out to have its uses. Even with screen damage, your Ipod is still not useless.

The best part about an Ipod is that, it can serve as a portable file container, no matter if the screen is working absolutely fine or not. Even if your Ipod screen has been destroyed so badly that you cannot interact with your applications, you can still use the Ipod to store files. To do that, when your Ipod is connected; check out “Enable Disk Use” in the Summary window in iTunes. Don’t you think that its functionality is quite similar to a hard drive? So now, there is no need to be quite as upset if your screen has been damaged or broken. Make the most out of even a dead Ipod.

Another of the common problems people tend to face with an Ipod is with the battery. Rechargeable batteries only have a limited life, one which is far shorter than the device it powers. Having said that, even with a dead battery, there is lot more you can try out with your Ipod. If the battery of your Ipod is dead, you can still connect it to your computer and play music from your very own favorite collection.

The third problem though is that with the constant hardware revisions that Apple bring out, even if your ipod is deader than a dead parrot, you’ll never actually feel that bad about replacing it as the newer models always offer more features. Crafty old Apple!

The goal of most business owners is to make money. This often results with the selling of a particular product or service. However, to sell that product or service business owners need to alert the general public. Customers cannot buy a product or a service if they do not know that it exists. That is why, as a business owner, you need to advertise your business.

When it comes to advertising there are many business owners who literally cringe. Are you doing this now? There is a good chance that you are because many advertising methods cost money. As a business owner you want to make money not spend it, right? Unfortunately, if you believe that all forms of advertising take money, you are sadly mistaken. Although you may have to spend money to make your business what you want it to be, there are ways to promote your business and the products or services that you sell without having to spend any money at all.

Is your curiosity peaked yet? There is a good chance that it is, rightfully so. One of the ways that you can promote your online business, without having to spend a dime, is by using something that is readily available online. That thing is an online social networking website. A large number of internet users, in fact millions of them, belong to at least one social networking website.

When it comes to social networking, there are many individuals who think of online friendships or online relationships. While these types of relationships are the most common, did you know that social networking is also used for businesses? In fact, that was originally how social networking got started. If you are a small business owner, especially one that operates an online business, there is a way that you can use social networking sites to your advantage.

Although social networking websites are traditionally focused on those that would like to make online friends or develop online relationships, there are networking sites that are designed for business owners. These websites will not only allow you to share your business information with other business owners, but it will also allow you to develop close relationships with those that share an interest that is similar to yours. Essentially, this means that you could not only learn valuable business information, but you could also walk away with a new business partner or a new friend.

As previously mentioned, social networking websites with a focus on businesses, are a great way to promote your business. However, this does not mean that you should completely forget about the other online social networking websites, the ones that are designed to make online friendships. Although you may not learn any valuable business tips by joining Yahoo! 360 or MySpace, you may be able to get new customers and new customers is exactly what your business should want and need.

If you are looking to join an online community, you will need to create your own profile or profile page. If you are planning on joining a traditional social networking website, to gain access to millions of potential new customers, you are urged to be careful when making your online webpage or profile. One thing that internet users hate is being solicited for business. This does not mean that you cannot use social networking to your advantage; it just means that you need to be careful with how you do it. Instead of creating a MySpace page or a Yahoo! 360 page for your business, you are advised to make one for yourself, but, of course, you will want to include information on your business.

By joining a social networking website, especially one that is popular and has a large number of members, you should be able to generate interest in your business, including the products or services that you sell. Who knows, but that interest generated could turn into sales; thus making your social networking experience more than worth it.

A new merging of technology may mean the end of having to carry around cumbersome testing and treatment devices for diabetes users worldwide as a new artificial pancreas goes into development and testing. Continue reading →

Excellent news for those afflicted by diabetes, as well as their families — on January 13th plans were announced by diabetes advocates and a company that specialises in manufacturing insulin pumps joined together to develop an artificial pancreas, effectively a system of monitors and pumps designed to manage type-1 diabetes. The Johnson and Johnson unit, Animas, was chosen by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to develop and test the new system.

Animus makes insulin pumps, and they will work in tandem with the Foundation in order to develop a wireless system that will combine devices that continuously monitor glucose levels, insulin pumps and sophisticated software. The device will effectively free diabetics from the cumbersome task of continually having to check their blood and administer insulin to themselves.

The final aim is a device capable of checking the blood all throughout the day as well as being able to deliver insulin whenever needed without requiring any action whatsoever from the patient.

The artificial pancreas would, in effect, always be many steps ahead of splitting the device in two and using either an insulin pump or a glucose monitoring system in isolation – making the necessity of having two devices strapped to the body a small price to pay.

Dr. Alan Lewis, chief executive officer and president of the Foundation, saw the development as a magical – and previously unworkable – marriage of the two devices. The devices are available today, but currently work independently of each other, he commented, adding that the magic of the new device will be the subsequent ability of the two devices to effectively talk to each other, delivering a new era in treatment for diabetes patients.

The devices are the culmination of years of work by the Foundation in conjunction with academic centres to develop a seamless system and they are now ready to translate years of research and testing into commercial development. Animus will provide the technical expertise in developing the new devices.

In type-1 diabetes, the body mistakenly destroys the pancreatic cells that make insulin. The body subsequently becomes unable to break down and use sugar, and if the condition is left untreated nerves and blood vessels are destroyed, leading to organ failure and eventually death. Even if treatment is administered patients can suffer organ damage, kidney failure and loss of vision, and in some cases can even lose limbs. The new artificial pancreas, with the help of new software that Animus will hope to test and develop, will control the pumps and ensure that blood sugar levels do not fall too low or rise too high, thereby relieving patients and their families of the continual burden of testing blood sugar levels and the need to self-administer.

There are two major search engine marketing strategies in use today: SEO (search engine optimization) and PPC (pay-per-click). Both strategies are entirely different and it is tough to decide which one or which combination is right for you.

To decide which strategy is best for you, consider the basics. It is easier to judge the pros and cons when taking the big picture into account. People will continue to battle for the top search engine positions. Search engine marketing is undoubtedly one of the best sources of targeted traffic.

As people continuously try to find new and unique ways to get additional traffic to their web sites, the SEO industry continues to grow. PPC refers to advertising on a search engine that charges on a per click basis whenever a visitor clicks on one of your ads. The order of ads is usually based on bidding prices, meaning that the advertiser who bids the highest price per click will be listed first. These sponsored listings are known as PPC listings.

SEO tries to change your search engine ranking by looking at a number of factors including link popularity, Page Rank and so on. If your web site is search engine optimized then obviously you are more likely to have a good ranking in the search engines. A well-optimized and marketed site will be listed in the top results whenever a person searches for related keywords. One of the best benefits of SEO marketing is you don’t have to pay for any clicks! So, how can we decide which method is better? Both methods actually serve different purposes. However, one is likely to be a better fit for your business than the other one.

PPC

PPC traffic, rankings and results tend to be more stable and predictable than SEO, and, combined with its low cost, this makes PPC one of the more popular ways of advertising. Most companies try PPC before they try SEO, because it’s seen as more stable. In many cases PPC lets you rank well on the search engines, without having to do the tedious work involved in SEO – no finding link partners, posting links, creating content and so on. As long as you have the budget for it, the ranking is yours. Another advantage is that the listing will get posted when you want it and not when the search engine gets around to it. With PPC’s popularity growing day by day, the market is also getting competitive. You will find that CPC’s (costs per clicks) are steadily rising, and for a common man it is getting tough to invest much. As with most auctions, the more people bidding on PPC, the higher the prices get.

SEO

The main benefit of SEO is that it does not cost per click. The disadvantages are that the traffic to your website is more unpredictable and requires a lot of work. With SEO, you have to adapt and constantly change strategies as search engines change their algorithms. SEO is also slower than PPC, as many search engines dont list new sites. So what should you choose? Well, it depends on how much money you are willing to spend, what your time line is, and what your return on investment is. If you have cash then PPC should be your first choice, as it produces fast results. PPC can also be used for testing the effectiveness of web sites. If you have time and money to invest in long-term results, SEO is an excellent option as well.

All and all, the best marketing strategy is typically to go with PPC in the short term to get immediate traffic and analyze conversions. SEO should then be taken with a long term view in mind, so you can reap the benefits of free traffic later on.

With modern games looking for new locations to attract players, many new games are turning to one of the few places they're yet to set a virtual foot into: China. Continue reading →

China made a big deal in 2008 with the Summer Olympics, and in many ways they’re gearing up to be much more open and pro-active in the world through their international activities, including hosting the World Expo in 2010. But what about it, especially Shanghai the “Pearl of the East”, popping up on games?

While an abstract form of ancient China has existed in the game world for quite some time thanks to kung-fu action games and RPG such as “Jade Empire” many modern day aspects of the eastern powerhouse are starting to pop up as well, including the entire setting of the upcoming “Army of Two: The 40th Day” taking place in a virtual city under siege.

So what do the Chinese have to think about this? If Mission Impossible 3 with its grossly inaccurate depiction of Shanghai and the frustration it left in the hearts of many local citizens is any clue about how seeing their entire hometown destroyed, the people held hostage, and then having two Americans of all people come through to save the day might make them feel then I’d speculate some waves to be made on the game’s release in the industry, at least in China.

Still, what about the positive aspects this shows as well? For China this shows a growing interest in their country, which is a big plus there in itself. For gamers it means a fusion of tradition and modern life while being thrown into a high-tech society that is struggling with finding itself as it quickly adapts to existing Western advancements while developing its own that are out-pacing European or American endeavors more and more each day. The result? A perfect atmosphere for just about any modern sci-fi or fantasy game you’d like, either open-ended or restricted to specific areas.

Personally I wouldn’t be surprised to see other well-known Chinese cities such as Hong Kong, Macao and Beijing popping up in more games in the coming months and years, and eventually maybe even less well-known major tourist or business locales such as Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Suzhou or Hangzhou too. With such a large country offering a huge selection of geographic locations to model games after as well as extensive history and culture the game industry would do itself harm by overlooking what’s to be had for inspiration and more. After all, who doesn’t want to fly using kung-fu alone? Superpowers are so overrated.

You might wonder what an emulator is. Emulators allow your computer to act like a console system such as the Apple IIe or the Atari 2600, which are used to emulate the hardware of a variety of classic arcade games.

Are all classic arcade games emulated? No, but those games made before 1992 are. Not all systems are easy to emulate.

Why is there a need to emulate classic arcade games? There are three major reasons why:

1. Popularity – if the system is popular, even if it is classic, the more effort is pushed to emulate it.

2. Availability of the Information – if the system contains a lot of information, it will be easier to emulate. If a game has never been emulated before, it will require a lot of reverse engineering, which could at times be frustrating.

3. Technical Hurdles – the hardware limits restrictions that are hard to avoid. For example, it took quite some time before the Atari 7800 was emulated, due to the encryption algorithm which prohibited games from being loaded. In addition, newer systems may lack the absolute horsepower to have the game run at a playable, and faster speed.

Although emulators are difficult to run, especially if it is your first time, you must download an emulator and unzip it. If you are not familiar with the procedures, you must read the documentation carefully.

Emulators are compound pieces of software. Most emulators may not perfectly emulate the capability of the system it is trying to copy. The imperfections in some emulators may be minor, sometimes timing problems may occur. Some emulators won’t run games at all, or worse have some display problems. Some emulators may be deficient in joystick support, sound, and other significant features.

In writing an emulator, you will undergo a difficult process which requires attaining the precise system information, and figuring out how to emulate it with the software code.

There are two different types of emulators. The first one is the single-system or the single-game emulator. Examples of these are an Atari 2600 emulator, NES emulator, and an Apple II emulator. These emulators can only emulate one kind of game or system. The second type of emulators is the multi-emulators. The best example of this is the Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator or the MAME. MAME can emulate hundreds of arcade games, although not all arcade games can run on the same kind of system. That is a huge generalization, but the reason multi-emulators require more resources compared to single system emulators, in most cases.

The start of emulation has opened a lot of opportunities for companies to take advantage of their resources. Why spend a lot of time reprogramming or porting the classic arcade games to a new console when you can easily write an upright emulator. Emulation is the solution to these problems, and gives the gamers an exact replica of the classic games they love and want to acquire.

It's been an incredibly fast moving decade for I.T. in general, no one foresaw the ubiquity that the internet would achieve.

What is the direction of computer development and directions of communications development?

We’ve come a long way baby! At the beginning of the 19th century, most people thought they would live in the same way their parents did, there was no social mobility, only survival. Today, nobody is surprised by the prediction that the Information Age will probably transform their lives, in their life time, beyond recognition. Let’s consider the trends development of computers and communications and, most excitingly, the area where they intersect.

If you’ve ever been a follower of Moores law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law), for the last 40 years, there has only been one certainty in the development of computers, that is, the number of transistors that can be inexpensively fitted onto a silicon of wafer will double every two years.

Since the days of ENIAC in the 1940′s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENIAC), computers have developed in one main direction and are continuing to do so, the key word has been minaturization. Everything has become smaller, ENIACs old fashioned radio-style vacuum tubes gave way after 1947 to the smaller more reliable transistor. A transistor is a small device used as a gatway to transfer electrical signals along predetermined paths (circuits).

The next Step was the development of tiny integrated circuits. Integrated circuits are entire collections of electrical circuits or pathways that are now etched on tiny squares (chips) of silicon half the size of your thumbnail. Silicon is a natural element found in sand. In pure form, it is the base material for computer processing devices.

The miniaturized processor, or microprocessor, in a personal desktop computer today can perform calculations that once required a computer filling an entire room. Popular comparisons with modern computers pit their power against those that sent the Apollo rockets to the moon over 40 years ago.

With Moores law expected to continue well into 2015 (and no doubt beyond), who knows exactly what the I.T. platforms of 2020 will be like but you can be sure of one thing, they will be faster, cheaper and make todays Intel I7 look like the cutting edge P60 of the early 90′s!

Following the latest terrorist attempt on the Northwest Airlines flight many TSA officials are considering utilizing advanced scanner technology to assist them with the passenger screening process, but at what cost to personal privacy? Continue reading →

Following the latest terrorist attempt on a Northwest Airlines flight where a passenger reportedly attempted to blow up the plane using explosives sewn into his underwear, many government and TSA officials are beginning to wonder whether or not additional scanning measures should be taken to attempt to detect dangerous substances or items before being allowed on the plane.

The interesting fact about the additional scanning measures that are being considered are non-invasive as well as they require no physical interaction between a passenger and a TSA official – thanks to technology more modern than a simple x-ray scanner officials can easily look for metal or other objects through any number of clothing layers and detect even the smallest item that may be hidden away.

Still, to quote Spiderman’s Uncle Ben, “with great power comes great responsibility”. These machines are at the point today where they can easily peel back layers of clothing to see anything that may be underneath, allowing for virtual strip-searches to be conducted at airports without traveler consent. Who is to say that TSA examiners won’t abuse this power to sneak a peek at what may be hidden beneath your clothing? How will travelers be protected from unjust prying eyes that may ogle them as soon as they step into an airport?

These concerns are the primary points that are being made by many organizations fighting the decision currently under debate of whether or not to include these advanced machines in all major airport terminals in the near future. Even groups such as the ACLU are stepping in and calling these searches a civil rights violation that strongly outweighs any potential benefit they may bring over current security measures.

The solution that is being presented to this is to utilize the technology available to the TSA security providers, however to do so in a much smarter way rather than an unjust and potentially violating manner. Using specifically attuned detection settings for detecting metal objects alone, for example, could speed up the scanning process when going through security checkpoints, while only doing more thorough body scans for individuals exhibiting suspicious behavior could also limit the potential civil violations that many people fear occurring.

Technology can be a powerful ally in helping keep us safe, but at the same time it can also be dangerous to us as we struggle to find a proper balance between safety and privacy.
